East India Cocktail

East India Cocktail
 
1 1/2 ounces Martell VSOP cognac
1 ounce orange curaçao
1 1/2 ounces pineapple juice
1 dash Angostura bitters
Flamed orange peel, for garnish
Nutmeg, for grating
Combine the first four ingredients with ice, and shake. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass, dust with freshly grated nutmeg, and garnish by flaming the orange peel over the top of the drink.

 A classic, made even better because Rachel Maddow has put her mark on it.

Ingredients:
Ice
1 Lime
Tonic water
1 1/2 oz Gin
1 oz Cynar

Directions:
1. Fill a highball glass with ice and add 1 lime, cut into quarters.
 2. Add 1 1/2 oz of gin.
3. Pour in tonic water until glass is almost full.
 4. Add 1 oz of Cynar.
 5. Garnish with an orange wedge (optional).

Makes 1 cocktail.
Ingredients:
  • 3/4 oz. gin (preferably Plymouth or Death's Door)
  • 3/4 oz. Cointreau
  • 3/4 oz. Lillet Blanc
  • 3/4 oz. fresh lemon juice (squeezed from an actual lemon)
  • 2 drops of absinthe
Pour the gin, Cointreau, Lillet Blanc and lemon juice to your cocktail shaker. Then, add no more than 2 drops of absinthe. Add ice, then shake well (until you can't do it anymore!), then strain the wondrous, lemon-y concoction into your glass.

The beautiful, bewitching, otherworldly Golden Gate Bridge turns 75 years old this weekend. So as a happy birthday to the bridge, and an excuse to teach you how to make a really delicious whisky-drink that has a horrendous name, I hereby present to you... The Frisco.

I know! Worst name in the world, right? No one from San Francisco would ever use that word -- but the drink is delicious, so here you go:
 2 ounces of Rye
½ ounce of lemon juice (from real, actual lemons)
 ½ ounce of Benedictine and some ice cubes By rights, you're supposed to shake a Frisco (you're supposed to shake anything with fruit juice in it), but I prefer to stir it. Sue me.
Pour it into a cocktail glass... ...and think happy, foggy, 75-year-old, international-orange-colored thoughts.

Emergency Manager from Michigan

From Michigan

  The Emergency Manager (Serves two)
 2 shots of Makers Mark (or other good quality bourbon)
1 shot of Tuaca ½ shot of Chai simple syrup (see below)
 1-2 dashes orange bitters 3 orange peel shavings
Chill two martini glasses by filling with ice and water. Add Makers Mark, Tuaca, Chai simple syrup and bitters to cocktail shaker.
Drain martini glasses, add ice to shaker, and shake for about a minute. Rub rims of martini glasses with one of the orange peel shavings, add a peel to each glass, and pour in the Emergency Manager.

Chai simple syrup: 6 Chai tea bags 1 cup water 1 cup sugar Add sugar to water, bring to boil. Add contents of tea bags to the water, remove from heat, and steep 5 minutes. Strain and cool.

MILK PUNCH

One-third of an ounce simple syrup
2 ounces cognac
1 ounce rum
2 or 3 ounces of milk

Add crushed/shaved ice, shake well.
Pour it into the glass without straining.
Grate some nutmeg on the top!

Communist Cocktail

Communist Cocktail Recipe courtesy Rachel Maddow, as made on last night's Late Night With Jimmy Fallon.

I was a little wary of the lemon juice, as the bracing acidity can easily overpower a cocktail, but I proceeded as per the recipe and was pleasantly surprised. The orange juice and Cherry Heering go a long way toward softening the acidity and sweetening the drink, and the result is downright delicious. Seizing the means of production never tasted so good.

 1 ounce London dry gin
1 ounce orange juice
3/4 ounce lemon juice
1/2 ounce Cherry Heering Shake with ice.
Strain into a chilled cocktail glass.

 2 oz Tanqueray 10 gin
.25 oz grenadine by Small Hands Foods (San Francisco)

 Stir well and strain into 5 oz cocktail glass

 Recipe: 1/2 oz. lemon juice
1/2 oz. simple syrup (sugar* and water mixed in equal parts)
1 1/2 oz. booze (Some people make it with gin, other people make it with cognac. It's traditional and therefore more correct to make it with gin, but certain cable television news hosts prefer it with cognac.)
Shake that up with ice. Strain into a champagne glass Top with champagne. Lemon twist. Fin.

*Rachel explained that her simple syrup was brown because it's Demerara syrup. Demerara sugar is raw sugar that hasn't had the molasses refined out of it. Kind of like that sugar that comes in the brown paper packets (but different).

Don't eat the garnish !

Affinity Cocktail
1 oz Dalmore Gran Reserva
1 oz dry vermouth 1 oz sweet vermouth
2 dashes Bitter-Truth Jerry Thomas Bitters
 Lemon twist
Stir well in a mixing glass with ice and strain into a chilled coupe. Squeeze lemon peel on top and garnish.

Modern Cocktail No. 2
1 oz Dalmore 15
1 1/2 oz Sloe gin
1 dash Orange bitters 1 dash
Absinthe 1 dash house-made grenadine (don’t buy the crappy sugary Rose’s brand when it’s so easy to make your own)
Shake with ice and strain into a chilled coupe.

 Scotch Zoom (Richard Boccato)
 2 oz Scotch whisky (unspecified)
3/4 oz honey 3/4 oz cream
 Shake with ice and strain into a chilled coupe.

 Jack Ward (Yael Vengroff)
 1 1/2 oz Dalmore 15 1/2 oz Bonded Applejack
1/2 oz fresh lemon juice
1/2 oz fresh orange juice
1/2 oz grenadine (I don’t need to repeat myself)
1/4 oz Benedictine Absinthe to rinse glass
Shake with ice and strain into a cocktail glass that’s been rinsed with absinthe.

The Deather (Jennifer Nelson) 
2 1/4 oz Dalmore 15
1/2 oz Lillet Blanc
2 dashes Highland Heather Bitters (can substitute with Peychaud’s)
Absinthe to rinse glass sugar cube lemon wedge
Muddle sugar cube and lemon with the bitters.
Combine with ice, Scotch, and Lillet. Strain into a cocktail glass that’s been rinsed with absinthe and garnish with a lemon twist.

 The Scottish Rite (Jason Litrell) 
2 oz Dalmore 15
1/2 oz Oloroso Drysack Sherry
1/2 oz sweet vermouth
2 dashes Bittermens Xocolatl Mole Bitters
1 dash Benedictine
Stir and strain over an old fashioned glass with a block of ice and garnished with an orange peel.

HARRY'S PICK ME UP
Ingredients:
1 ounce of brandy or cognac
2 teaspoons real Grenadine
Juice of 1/2 lemon (or lime or other citrus fruit)
Champagne or other sparkling wine of your choice

Prepare a small pitcher of ice for one cocktail. Place everything except the champagne in the pitcher and stir it briskly.
Using a strainer, transfer the brandy mixture into a tall wineglass. It should fill the glass up about halfway. Top it with your champagne or sparkling wine.

Directions:
Stir ingredients with ice. Shaking works, but stirring preserves the clarity, which is aesthetically better when it's mixed with champagne.
Strain it into your glass.

Glass: Old Fashioned

1. Pour an oz or so of absinthe over ice in the glass and swirl to coat the sides. Set it aside.

 2. In a mixing tin or glass with ice,
 add: 2 oz Sazerac Rye Whiskey
A barspoon of simple syrup*
Three or four shakes of Peychaud’s Bitters
One or two shakes of Angostura Bitters

*Simple syrup is one or 1 ½ parts sugar stirred into one part water until the sugar dissolves. Some say heat it until syrupy, then refrigerate it; others say don’t bother.)

3. Discard the ice in the glass, leaving just a little of the absinthe to coat the glass. 4. Strain and pour the cocktail into the glass. Squeeze the oil from a lemon twist onto the drink, and rub it over the glass rim. It’s ok to drop in the twist as a garnish – or not. Voila!

MINT JULEP
Signature drink of the Kentucky Derby (May 2)

Ingredients:
3/4 oz. simple syrup or one teaspoon sugar
4 mint leaves and a sprig of mint
(Use tender, young sprigs.)
2 1/2 ounces Maker's Mark Bourbon
Preparation:
Prepare some very cold, very dry powdered ice with large cubes of Kold Draft ice and a canvas ice bag. Bruise the mint leaves in the bottom of a julep cup with sugar or sugar syrup and then remove the muddled leaves. Add ice to the three quarter mark and half of the bourbon. Stir to chill the julep cup. Top off with more powdered ice and the remaining bourbon and continue to stir until the outside of the cup begins to freeze. Garnish with the mint sprig and set aside to rest while the julep cup freezes over on the outside. Pick up carefully and imbibe.

WHISKEY SMASH*

Ingredients:
1 1/2 ounces Maker's Mark Bourbon
1 ounce simple syrup
3 lemon pieces (cut a lemon in half and then quarter one of the halves, use three of the quarters)
5 mint leaves
Lemon wedge for garnish
1 mint sprig for garnish

Preparation:
Muddle the lemon pieces, mint leaves and simple syrup in the bottom of a Boston shaker glass. Add the bourbon and shake well with ice. Strain into a rocks glass with ice. Garnish with a mint sprig and a lemon wedge.

Ingredients:
1 1/2 ounces Maker's Mark Bourbon
1/2 ounce Dry Sack Sherry
1/2 oz. fresh lemon juice
1/2 simple syrup
Splash fresh orange juice
Splash cranberry juice
5 mint leaves
1 mint sprig
1 orange zest
Preparation:
Assemble the first six ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice and shake well. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass and garnish with orange peel and mint sprig.

don't strain, serve in a short glass, garnish with pineapple wedge, tiny umbrella
serve with short, stubby (fat) straws

 Angostura bitters, often simply referred to as angostura, is a concentrated bitters made of water, 45.6% alcohol, gentian root, and vegetable flavoring extracts[1] by House of Angostura in Trinidad and Tobago. They are typically used for flavoring beverages, or (less often) food. The bitters were first produced in the town of Angostura (Ciudad Bolívar, Venezuela) (hence the name), and do not contain angostura bark. The Jack Rose

Jack Rose is the name of a classic cocktail, popular in the 1920s and 1930s, containing applejack, grenadine, and lemon or lime juice. It notably appeared in a scene in Ernest Hemingway's 1926 classic, The Sun Also Rises, in which Jake Barnes, the narrator, drinks a Jack Rose in the Crillon Paris hotel bar while awaiting the arrival of Lady Brett Ashley.
The Jack Rose is one of six basic drinks listed in David A. Embury's classic The Fine Art of Mixing Drinks.
